There are various techniques that you can use to successfully teach a dog come to you every time you call him. Try this one, it is fun to do and provides you and your dog with a game and exercise while you are both training.
This popular way on teaching a dog to come to you is outlined as follows:
While someone else holds your dog on a leash, you approach them. As you approach, be excited and exude a lot of enthusiasm so that your dog gets all excited. Your dog will want to come to you, but can’t on account of being tethered to the leash.
Once you get to the desired distance from your dog (20-30 feet), call him using his name and then the command you want to use. Simultaneous to your call, your friend needs to immediately release the dog from the leash. As soon as your dog reaches you, praise him and give him a treat.
This makes you very interesting to your dog because he is being held back when he really wants to be over there with you; then when he finally arrives, he gets rewarded with a treat. It strongly imprints on his mind that coming to you when you call him feels good and is something he really wants to do.
Key: Remember, it is important that your dog is excited before you call him. So make sure to really excite the dog however you can and then perform the exercise as described.
A word of caution: try not to carry out the exercise if he is disinterested – just wait for another time.
The reason for this is that you don’t want to expose him to the situation where you are calling him when he really doesn’t want to come over. The trick is really using his excitement to learn the habit of coming to you when called. When you practice, you want to make sure it doesn’t become a chore or that you get frustrated and start yelling at the dog because this will desensitize your dog to the command. So keep it light! This sets the dog up to successfully complete the command.
Set him up for success!
