To STOP Your Dog’s Chewing Problems

Here at ‘GoodDogAdvice.com’ we advocate that:
AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION IS WORTH A POUND OF CURE.
However, if your dog is already chewing, you will find some helpful advice if you scroll down the page.  However, for tips on prevention right now… read on dog lovers!

How to stop dog chewing prevention tips:
Please take responsibility for your dog’s inappropriate chewing behavior and manage his environment.

Here’s how:

You can dog proof the areas where your dog will be living, just as you would prepare for a young child entering your home.  Think 0 to 3 year old kids – mischief!

Provide fresh water and yummy fun things to chew.

Definitely remove no-no’s that may be irresistible to your dog, like shoes, socks, term papers, stuffed toys, throw rugs, and, of course, potential hazards like exposed electrical bits.  Wire-haired terriers aren’t the only dogs to love these.

It is a good idea not to give a new dog full access to your house, leave him alone there, and then expect him to know what not to chew.  That is your job!

Give your puppy or dog their own toys.  Avoid using a personal or household item when playing with your dog, because you can’t count on him to tell the difference between his toys and your stuff later.   It all looks good to him, in fact, your stuff looks better. Giving him other things to chew is definitely how to stop dog chewing!

Here’s an easy one – put a gate at the door of the kitchen (or other dog-proofed area of the house) where your dog can relax when you do have to leave him alone.  Make sure though, that you leave him something cushy to lie around on, cold tile or lino doesn’t always feel good at nap time (dogs get cold too!)

Dogs say it’s not okay to leave them alone for long periods, and we at GoodDogAdvice.com agree because they are social animals just like us!

ENOUGH WITH THE CHEWING ALREADY:
A good idea on how to stop dog chewing is to use the Interrupt and Redirect method. This really works!

Interrupt your little rascal immediately when you see him chewing something that is ‘off limits’.  Use a firm ‘no’ in a controlled (but not too loud) voice.  Remember not to use his name when correcting him though; because you want him to associate his name with good times and feel eager to come to you when you call him.

Redirect him whenever you catch him chewing, by immediately using the controlled ‘no’ and directing his attention to his bone or toy.  Get excited about the toy – talk encouragingly about it – he will catch on.

TOWARD A POUND OF CURE:

For Success on How To Stop Dog Chewing:
Use Kindness when you get home to find some item chewed to bits.  Punishment will not help one bit, because your dog has no concept of time and will not associate the punishment with the chewing behavior.  Unless caught in the act, he won’t know what you are going on about.  So clean it up and put your stuff away next time.

Kindness in teaching is effective with dogs as they want to be accepted and loved by their ‘pack’, especially their pack leader.  That means positively reinforce good behavior and interrupt and redirect the undesirable behavior.

Minimize boredom and anxiety and decrease the chances of your dog chewing inappropriately.   Provide ‘together’ time, and build it into your day so that your dog can count on it.  He is social so he needs time with you. Give him plenty of exercise and training and toys that are interesting and safe. For instance, dog lovers all over rave about how their dogs just love the Kong Chew toy and the Boomer Ball.

Enjoy your play and training! We hope that you learned a great deal about how to stop dog from chewing.

Best Regards,
