It is very frustrating to have a puppy constantly nipping at you.  Use the following tips from the pros to help you to stop a puppy biting.

Tip #1:      Don’t take your puppy away from his mummy too soon!

You must understand that when you take puppies away from their mothers too soon, you can be faced with even more difficulty than usual when it comes to controlling their biting behaviour. During early puppyhood, while playing with his mother and litter mates, a puppy will naturally learn acceptable ways of mouthing and teething.  Each one of them will be shown by the others what hurts and doesn’t hurt and what is therefore acceptable.  So before taking your puppy home, make sure he has spent sufficient time with his mother and his litter mates as it will help to give you both a head start with training.

Tip #2:      Tell him it hurts for crying out loud!

Further to Tip #1:   The importance of the time your puppy spends with his mother and litter mates early on cannot be underestimated.  The mother, especially, will be ‘training’ her pups and you can learn from her.  It is best if you can watch the group before bringing your puppy home. By observation, you can observe and listen to the way a mother reacts to a biting puppy.  Mother dogs have specific sounds that inform the puppy that he is hurting her or one of his litter mates during play time.  What you can do is simulate the mother’s sound to let your puppy know that you are hurt because he has just bitten you. Let out a noisy and whiny yelp even when he is only chewing on your pants, pajamas or your shoe lace. Then leave the puppy alone just the same as his mother would do. The puppy will understand this.  If the nipping still persists, give out a loud yelp then put your puppy in his crate.  Remember – never keep your puppy inside the crate for long.

Tip #3:       Give the biting blighter a toy!

Along with biting, puppies also like to chew.  Providing safe and interesting toys for your puppy to chew can help him cope with the stress of teething and the natural habit of young pups to bite and explore new things with their mouths.  It is important that you give toys that challenge the mental ability of your pup. When he is chewing something he shouldn’t, simply take it away and immediately give him his own toy. Soon, your puppy will associate the smell of the chew toy with his satisfaction of the need for mouthing and chewing.  He will learn that the toy belongs to him and that he can chew it with no negative repercussions.  In this way, puppies will prefer the chewing toys rather than other items around the house, which also goes a long way in your quest to stop puppy from biting!

You can purchase toys with designs similar to a bone, a ball or a stick. There are hundreds of toys on the market for you to choose from, so find the ones your pup really enjoys.

Tip #4:      No puppy is an island!

Correct socialization is an important aspect of bringing up a well adjusted dog.  Because boredom and frustration are main reasons why puppies and dogs continue to chew, responsible dog owners must address these root causes.  In order to stop puppies biting you and your friends, it will help to provide them with new situations that are interesting and fun.  Begin by allowing your puppy to spend time with other puppies and dogs, as well as people. Take him to parks or a neighbor’s house or other places where both people and dogs gather. In this way, your puppy will begin to feel more comfortable in new situations, and will look forward to being with you wherever you go.  It will go a long way to building confidence and respect in your dog and will make him a joy to be around for the rest of his life.

So all you new puppy people…….in addressing the issue ‘how to stop puppy from biting’; these tips are just some of the simple things you can do as a responsible and loving dog owner to help your puppy deal with his need to bite, nip and chew. You will surely delight upon seeing your puppy behaving in the best possible way he can. Both of you will get through the inevitable growing pains that must be endured while he is young.  If you already have adult dogs with biting and chewing behaviour, the above mentioned steps will help with them as well.
