Even More Reasons Why Dogs Bark:
Attention seeking – Your dog needs attention and love, so give him lots of cuddles and play with him often. To get your dog to stop barking, you mustn’t forget that he is a pack animal and needs interaction and barking has a part in that. A good balance of acknowledging this aspect of being a dog while providing enough exercise will enable him to lie down and relax when it is not play time. When he is being demanding with his attention seeking, check this balance.

Defending territory – This is absolutely natural and therefore normal dog behavior. Certain dogs, like terriers, are more inclined than others to bark for this reason – they are just very territorial. To get your dog to stop barking, make sure the dog gets plenty of exercise as described above, and also by showing your evident disapproval and discouragement of the barking itself. Be calm and assertive. When your dog barks to defend territory, whether at home or away, quietly and firmly tell him that’s enough and redirect him to the desired behaviour. For instance, make him sit or lie down quietly and then resume what you were doing.
EXTRA TIPS TO AVOID EXCESSIVE BARKING:
If you kennel your dog outside, position his kennel away from yours or your neighbour’s fence, drive or walk way as this could tempt him to bark every time he sees someone getting close to what he perceives as his territory. This is a great way to get your dog to stop barking when you are out.
Can you imagine having a barker for a dog and your neighbors are calling you in the middle of the night to get your dog to stop barking? Maybe this is happening to you! If your dog barks when he is excited, make sure you don’t play with him and get him excited during quiet times like early morning or late at night, or right before you will be leaving him.
Another way to get your dog to stop barking while you are out is to give your doggy plenty of good exercise before you leave him – a tired dog will bark less. Make sure he is quiet and relaxed from his exercise before you go. Be vigilant about being calm. Don’t make a fuss when you go out the door, it will increase his anxiety and could cause more barking.
An obvious point, yet important – it is crucial not to encourage a dog to bark, even in play, as it will undermine any efforts you are already trying to make in stopping your dog from barking.
Good Luck and Love Your Dog!
