Stop Dog Jumping
When in ’stop dog jumping mode’, it is important to understand that dogs jump up on people to greet them and to play with them because they are SO excited and love their humans to bits! But it would be nice to have your dog not jump on you every time you get home from work. It is a common problem for people; and while it is a natural dog behavior, it is annoying. It can also be harmful to small humans especially when the dog is large. You need to feel confidant saying, “Dog stop jumping NOW!” and have success with it.
The reason dogs do this is because they are social animals and they get extremely happy to see us, and want to engage and play with us. They can be naturally exuberant when excited and they throw everything into it. But ultimately, it is important to stop dog jumping and nip it in the bud if possible.

To STOP Your Dog’s Jumping Problems
We actually (unwittingly) encourage this behavior. When they are cute, adorable puppies, we invite them up – so we are teaching them from a very young age that this is acceptable behavior. So you’ll want to stop letting the puppy jump up… so long as you want to have a full grown dog not jump all over you and your friends.
Now, if we want to stop dog jumping, we have to train them that greeting has to be done with all four paws on the ground.
As with any training, you have to make sure that everyone that comes into contact with your dog is consistent with the training you are doing. This means you’ll have to make everyone in your family and also your friends aware what it is you are doing with him to have your dog not jump up anymore. If you want to stop dog jumping, you can’t have dad inviting the dog to jump and mum preventing the dog from jumping, because this just confuses the heck out of the dog and will frustrate your attempts at changing the jumping behavior – and at this point you’ll have a ‘confused’ dog jump up instead of a ‘trained’ dog NOT jump up.
Try a ‘no jump’ technique to have your dog not jump.
- Here is a very simple and amazing technique to help you teach your dog to stop jumping up. Because walking away can be a hit and miss technique to stop dog jumping, you can simply cross your arms in front of your chest and look up and away from the dog (looking straight up works the best).
- Another technique to stop dog jumping that is very effective, is allowing your dog to jump up but when he does, you grab his paws. You do not crush them but you do hold on to them. There will be a certain point where the dog will struggle a bit to get away. Hold onto the paws for a brief moment more, and then say “off” – and let go. Then pet him when he gets to the ground. Dogs are very sensitive to having their paws held and they won’t like it. So just do this every time the dog jumps up and soon he’ll learn not to do it because he’ll associate the jumping up with his paws being firmly held!
As soon as the dog is down, go ahead and praise the dog so that he associates being down with feeling good and being approved of – this is his reward. Wait until he is quiet, before engaging in play.
Often, before the dog is fully trained, he’ll be too excited to remember the training; for instance, when you first come home from work. To permanently teach your dog to not jump up, you simply need to persevere – consistently use the technique you have chosen to teach him not to jump up – he will eventually get it.
Have fun!
